Today, President Trump stood with the President of Italy today and read a statement that might raise some alarm bells. Also, it was apparent that this wasn’t Trump “off the cuff” but reading from a prepared speech.
Whoever wrote this either is about to get fired or just gave one of the greatest resignation letters ever. It is doubtful anyone would be employed after a gaffe like this. Perhaps they were thinking if they were fired over this, then they would at least be eligible for unemployment. If not, that speechwriter will once again have an opportunity to make Trump look bad or flaunt their own ignorance.
What was said? Trump said that Italy and the United States have been buddies going back to the Ancient Roman Empire:
“The United States and Italy are bound together by our shared cultural and political heritage dating back thousands of years to Ancient Rome.”

One astute Twitter user pointed out what may have been the motive behind the prepared remark …
Either this is the greatest resignation letter from a speechwriter or someone gets fired.

Someone might want to inform the White House that the United States has not been around quite that long. Furthermore, the Roman Empire has been gone significantly longer and went away long before the United States has existed.
This might not be the most significant thing Trump has said representing the United States in his tenure as President but it certainly is one of the most ignorant. One would think that between the writing, the vetting, and all of that, someone would have caught that major error.
Or perhaps no one wanted to catch it and it was some speechwriter’s way of giving Trump a proverbial middle finger.
In any case, it would be nice to get back to an administration that cares enough to get facts correct and not repeatedly embarrass the nation on the world stage.
