Delivering a eulogy at the funeral of the late Congressman Elijah Cummings, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reminded those in attendance that Cummings had been an eloquent voice of dissent during his life.

She also managed to direct one hell of a burn at President Donald Trump by using a Biblical reference:

“Like the prophet, our Elijah could call down fire from heaven—but he also prayed and worked for healing. Like that Old Testament prophet, he stood against corrupt leadership of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.”

That wasn’t all the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee had to say about Cummings. She also recalled his eloquent words about how we all have to be willing to speak truth to power:

“Toward the end of his life, he said, ‘I am begging the American people to pay attention to what is going on, because if you want to have a democracy intact for your children, and your children’s children, and generations yet unborn, we have got to guard this moment. This is our watch’

“‘When we are dancing with the angels, the question will be asked,’ he said, ‘In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact?’”

Cummings, who served as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, was often critical of what he saw from the Trump administration and the way the White House tries to subvert Congress and obstruct any form of investigation, even though the Constitution gives that power to the legislative branch.

With Trump’s impeachment now a very real possibility, we all need to remember that we are the ones who have been given the ultimate power in this country. We have the vote. We have the right to protest. And we can decide our future if we take time to get involved.
