After being asked about a new poll in which 53 percent of Republicans actually believe that Donald Trump is a better president than Abraham Lincoln, Miami Herald journalist Leonard Pitts shook his head in disappointment and promptly ripped them a new one.

Pitts, a black man, had not heard about the poll until MSNBC host Joy Reed informed him about it on Saturday. Trump has often portrayed himself as better than Lincoln even though Lincoln is consistently rated the best president in American history while Trump’s approval rating has been in the toilet since he took office in 2017.

And so, it was not a surprise that Pitts expressed utter shock. But he then called out Republicans for daring to think so highly of Trump.

“Is there a brick wall I can bang my head against a few times?” he asked. “I think I need a brick wall before I answer. I haven’t heard of that poll, but it sort of speaks further to the delusionary aspect of the Republican Party right now. This is not a party, this is a cult and it has been a cult for a long time and it wasn’t just this Abraham Lincoln quote.”

“I’m not being rhetorical,” Pitts continued. ”I mean that literally, that there is a very cultlike aspect to what we’re seeing going on with Trump. Particularly in the aspect of Trump is he who must not be questioned and all of his idiocies, and all of his incompetencies, all of his mendacities must be explained in the framework of him being infallible.”

Seriously, there’s a reason why Trump “loves” the poorly educated. It’s because most of them are his supporters and they are easy to manipulate. Trump also once bragged that he could murder someone in broad daylight on Fifth Avenue and his supporters would still vote for him. This poll pretty much proves it.

“In other words, if you see him being wrong, it’s not he’s being wrong, it’s he’s being so right that it’s beyond your puny ability to understand,” Pitts concluded. “When he tweeted himself out with Rocky’s body, I feel like for a lot of his base, they’re like, that’s how they really see him when they see him — that’s what they see. It’s a sense that there is no bottom and also the sense that they want easy answers.”

Here’s the video via YouTube:

Lincoln guided America through the Civil War, a cataclysmic event in our history that could have ended the American experiment. Trump has never faced anything like that at all. And while Lincoln devoted himself to uniting Americans, even asking that we show “malice toward none” and come back together in the aftermath of the war, Trump has only spent his presidency dividing Americans more than ever, not to mention coddling white supremacists. Lincoln thought about others and put the country before himself. Trump is a super narcissist who can’t even deliver a Thanksgiving speech without bragging about himself. Lincoln would be downright disgusted by Trump. And so should Republicans. But they are so obsessed with “owning the libs” that they have lost all sense of decorum and honor, so they would rather defend Trump no matter what than admit that they made a huge mistake by supporting him in the first place.
