Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, is warning that one of the main reasons President Donald Trump needs to be impeached is that he doesn’t do what’s in the best interest of the United States and is only interested in things that help him personally and politically.

Schiff spoke with Susan Glasser of the New Yorker and could not have been clearer when it comes to exactly why he thinks Trump needs to be removed from office, citing testimony from State Department official David Holmes:

“After the call, Holmes asked Sondland, ‘Does the President give a shit about Ukraine?’ As Holmes testified, the answer was no, he only cares about ‘the big stuff.’ Well, Holmes pointed out, there is big stuff happening in Ukraine, like a war with Russia, but Sondland said no, that was not what he meant. Trump only cared about matters that concerned him, like the investigations.”

The California Democrat then went on to add:

“That says it all,” Schiff told me. “The President doesn’t give a shit about what’s good for our country, what’s good for Ukraine. It’s all about what’s in it for him personally and for his reëlection campaign.” In that small moment in an obscure diplomat’s testimony, Schiff reflected, was the impeachment case in all its brazen simplicity. “That is a perfect summary,” he said, “of this whole scheme.”

Schiff is absolutely correct.

As we’ve seen time after time with President Trump — be it regarding Saudi Arabia, Turkey, or Russia — he first calculates how his policies will impact him and his business interests. National security and the long-term effect on the U.S. and its allies is always secondary to what will provide the greatest benefit to Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization. The Almighty Dollar is the guiding principle for this president.

While Trump and his allies parrot the bogus assertion that impeachment is just Democrats seeking payback, the truth is much darker: Impeachment is the only way to keep Donald Trump from utterly destroying this country to serve his own selfish ends.
