Four prominent conservative voices penned a scathing op-ed published on Tuesday taking aim at President Donald Trump and condemning the Republicans who still support him despite his crimes against the country and the Constitution.

GOP strategists Rick Wilson, John Weaver, and Steve Schmidt joined attorney George Conway, husband of Kellyanne Conway, to once again blast Trump’s unfitness for office and shame Republicans in a New York Times op-ed ahead of the House vote on two articles of impeachment on Wednesday.

Trump is being impeached because he illegally tried to bribe a foreign nation into investigating his political rival ahead of the 2020 Election and has obstructed Congress repeatedly to keep witnesses from testifying and evidence from being reviewed.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the damage Trump has done to our government and country, which is why the four men are working to defeat Trump in 2020.

“Patriotism and the survival of our nation in the face of the crimes, corruption and corrosive nature of Donald Trump are a higher calling than mere politics,” they wrote. “As Americans, we must stem the damage he and his followers are doing to the rule of law, the Constitution and the American character.”

“Over these next 11 months, our efforts will be dedicated to defeating President Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box and to elect those patriots who will hold the line,” they continued. “We do not undertake this task lightly, nor from ideological preference. We have been, and remain, broadly conservative (or classically liberal) in our politics and outlooks. Our many policy differences with national Democrats remain, but our shared fidelity to the Constitution dictates a common effort.”

Of course, they would not have to work to oust Trump in 2020 if Republicans were not hell-bent on acquitting Trump in the Senate, which will only embolden Trump to abuse his power more.

“This president’s actions are possible only with the craven acquiescence of congressional Republicans,” they wrote. “They have done no less than abdicate their Article I responsibilities. Indeed, national Republicans have done far worse than simply march along to Mr. Trump’s beat. Their defense of him is imbued with an ugliness, a meanness and a willingness to attack and slander those who have shed blood for our country, who have dedicated their lives and careers to its defense and its security, and whose job is to preserve the nation’s status as a beacon of hope.”

They concluded by condemning Republicans in Congress for being just as corrupt as Trump.

“Congressional Republicans have embraced and copied Mr. Trump’s cruelty and defended and even adopted his corruption,” they wrote. “Mr. Trump and his enablers have abandoned conservatism and longstanding Republican principles and replaced it with Trumpism, an empty faith led by a bogus prophet.”

Even if it means Democrats end up controlling the Senate and the White House after the 2020 Election, Wilson, Weaver, Conway and Schmidt are dedicated to defeating Trump and his Republican supporters in defense of the rule of law and our democratic values. Only a thoroughly defeated Republican Party can rise from the ashes free of the stain of Trumpism.
