In an effort to justify President Donald Trump’s order of an airstrike to kill Iranian general Qasem Suleimani, Vice-President Mike Pence falsely blamed Iran for the 9/11 attacks.

Suleimani was killed by the airstrike on Thursday night at the Baghdad airport. Trump did not inform Congress prior to giving the order as legally required by law and his actions have sparked fears around the globe that World War III is about to begin.

Trump took this action, not because he wanted to take out a terrorist, but because the beats of war drums would distract from his impeachment, which his supporters are now demanding be canceled despite his crimes.

Trump and his Republican allies have been throwing out every excuse they can think of to defend the airstrike, but they are not working as the backlash against the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East grows.

And so, Republicans are now invoking 9/11 by claiming Iran had something to do with the attack that killed nearly 3,000 Americans when two planes struck the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City 19 years ago.

While praising Trump’s order to kill Suleimani, Pence tweeted out a list of reasons why killing Suleimani was justified, including accusing Iran of assisting the terrorists who perpetrated 9/11.

The problem is that this is a lie. Iran had no hand in the 9/11 attacks and even the 9/11 Commission said as much after a long investigation.

“KSM and Binalshibh have confirmed that several of the 9/11 hijackers (at least eight, according to Binalshibh) transited Iran on their way to or from Afghanistan, taking advantage of the Iranian practice of not stamping Saudi passports,” the 9/11 Commission reports states. “They deny any other reason for the hijackers’ travel to Iran. They also deny any relationship between the hijackers and Hezbollah.”

“We have found no evidence that Iran or Hezbollah was aware of the planning for what later became the 9/11 attack,” the report concluded.

The passage can be found on page 241 of the report, which can be read by clicking here.

Blaming Iran for 9/11 as justification for killing Suleimani and potentially starting yet another war in the Middle East in which thousands of Americans could be killed is outrageous and inexcusable. This is nothing more than a desperate effort to excuse going to war with Iran. It’s even more outrageous because Pence ought to know better since he served in Congress at the time the report was delivered.

Iran had nothing to do with 9/11 and such an accusation demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that Trump and his cronies will say or do anything to get the war they’ve been wanting. And Pence should be ashamed of himself for using the 9/11 victims as part of that evil agenda.
