President Donald Trump’s legal team is performing so terribly that even Republicans such as Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) is admitting that their defense is worse than an 8th-grade book report.

The Senate impeachment trial is a serious proceeding designed to determine if Trump should be removed from office over his attempt to extort Ukraine into opening a sham investigation into his political rival to manipulate the 2020 Election in his favor. Trump abused his power and then he proceeded to obstruct Congress by refusing to turn over evidence and blocking witnesses from testifying.

The House passed both articles of impeachment in December and the House managers have presented a devastating case against Trump that Senate Republicans are hell-bent on ignoring so they can rush to acquittal in what amounts to a cover-up.

Trump’s own legal team, meanwhile, has made it clear that they could not lawyer themselves out of a paper bag much less defend the president in an impeachment trial.

So far, Trump’s legal team has not denied that he abused his power. Instead, they’ve spent their time insisting that abuse of power is not an impeachable offense and attacking the impeachment process all while telling demonstrable lie after lie, which the House managers have called out again and again.

The bottom line is Democrats did their homework and put together a devastating case, and Trump’s legal team is incompetent and flailing.

And even Republicans know that Trump’s team is an embarrassing mess.

Politico’s Andrew Desiderio reported on Wednesday that Democrats have put together such a strong case that it goes above and beyond the case presented by Republicans during the impeachment trial of former President Bill Clinton in 1999.

Furthermore, Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) has conceded that Republicans have not read the impeachment transcripts from the House.

The most interesting remarks he received, however, were from staunch Trump defender Rep. Matt Gaetz, who marveled at the Democratic case while expressing utter disappointment of Trump’s legal team.

Despite the ineptness of Trump’s legal team and their desperate unfounded argument, Senate Republicans intend to acquit Trump anyway while the American people watch the cover-up unfold before their eyes. They should be ashamed themselves, but that would be assuming Republicans had any shame in the first place.
