President Donald Trump is again telling his supporters Mexico will foot the bill for his border wall, even though he failed to explain exactly how he would make Mexico do so.
Speaking at a rally in New Jersey this week, the president patted himself on the back for a court ruling which said he can steal $3.6 billion worth of military construction funds for his long-promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border:
“The money is won. And we are now building that beautiful wall. And next year, we’ll be over 400 miles and shortly thereafter it will be complete.”
But as Newsweek points out, those 400 miles are a reduction from what the president has said in the past, when he promised 450 miles of the wall would be completed by the end of 2020.
However, it was what Trump said next that raised the most eyebrows:
“But, Mexico is, in fact, you will soon find out, paying for the wall, okay? The wall is ultimately and very nicely being paid for by Mexico.”
Trump, making stuff up, claims Mexico is paying for his border wall: “Mexico is in fact, soon you will find out, paying for the wall … no, the wall is ultimately, and very nicely, being paid for by Mexico.” pic.twitter.com/pDnBwEKHk4

Of course, this isn’t the first (and likely won’t be the last) time the president has incorrectly tried to assert that Mexico will pay to construct the border wall:
“The president had previously claimed that Mexico would pay for the wall through the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), however, as Politifact noted in an article fact-checking Trump’s campaign rally on Tuesday, as it stands, there is no such provision for the wall in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.”
We can probably expect more ludicrous promises and ridiculous boasts now that the president is in full campaign mode.
