Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) had his own “Leave Britney alone!” moment in defense of Attorney General Bill Barr on Tuesday while throwing a temper tantrum against the former Department of Justice officials who are calling for Barr to resign.

Barr has been under fire ever since he moved to interfere with the Roger Stone case on behalf of President Donald Trump after Trump complained about the sentencing recommendation federal prosecutors had sent the judge.

In response, over 1,100 former DOJ officials, a number that has since swelled to over 2,000, signed a letter condemning Barr and Trump for undermining the rule of law.

“Although there are times when political leadership appropriately weighs in on individual prosecutions, it is unheard of for the Department’s top leaders to overrule line prosecutors, who are following established policies, in order to give preferential treatment to a close associate of the President, as Attorney General Barr did in the Stone case,” the letter said.

During an interview on Fox News, Kennedy lashed out at the former DOJ officials and branded them as communists after demanding they “leave Bill Barr alone”.

“Let me be clear — I trust Bill Barr,” Kennedy said. “I know that there are like eleven-hundred former Justice Department officials who want him to resign. If you look deeply, you’ll find out that’s been put together by a group called Project Democracy, which is a group that’s just to the left of Lenin — I think everybody ought to leave Bill Barr alone and let him do his job.”

If the DOJ under Obama had done what Trump and Barr are doing, Kennedy would be calling for heads to roll. His temper tantrum represents hypocrisy on the highest level and makes it clear that Republicans don’t care about the rule of law. Furthermore, this letter has been signed by more than 2,000 former career prosecutors and appointees. Many of them are Republicans themselves. This is who Kennedy is accusing of being “left of Lenin,” and it’s an outrageous slander.
