Fox News host Tucker Carlson wants us all to know that the current coronavirus which has infected over 80,000 people worldwide and proved fatal to another 2.700, is a result of “diversity” and “wokeness.”

On his show Monday evening, Carlson sounded a racist tone, suggesting that Asians are to blame since the virus started in China.

Carlson also suggested that the media is trying to downplay the danger caused by the virus due to political correctness:

“If you think maybe we ought to take some steps to protect ourselves from it, then you’re a bigot.”

And then he pivoted to his denunciation of diversity:

“Identity politics trumped public health and not for the first time. Wokeness is a cult. They would let you die before they admitted that diversity is not our strength.”

What does that even mean? A virus starts in one part of the world and spreads to other parts, so diversity is to blame? That’s like saying the real cause of the flu is the fact that there are airplanes which allow people to travel to remote areas of the world and spread the virus. Quick, ground all the planes and stop all travel! Everyone stay in their home and don’t go out! Beware! Danger!

Carlson wasn’t the only right-wing media figure spreading half-truths and conspiracy theories regarding coronavirus.

Rush Limbaugh thinks the virus was created to destroy the presidency of Donald Trump, remarking Monday:

“It looks like the coronavirus is being weaponized as yet another element to bring down Donald Trump.

“Now, I want to tell you the truth about the coronavirus. … I’m dead right on this. The coronavirus is the common cold, folks.”

But he was far from done, adding:

“The drive-by media hype of this thing as a pandemic, as the Andromeda strain, as, ‘Oh, my God. If you get it, you’re dead…’ I think the survival rate is 98%,” he said. “Ninety-eight percent of people who get the coronavirus survive. It’s a respiratory system virus.”

The mortality rate is not yet known by researchers, so Limbaugh’s statistic is almost as bogus as he is.

The far right is convinced anything that could harm Trump politically is a plot. And yet they refuse to accept very real information that Russia is trying to help this president win releection come November. Their cognitive dissonance is gargantuan, and their willful ignorance may well be a bigger threat than any virus.
