One of the provisions in the coronavirus relief bill that Democrats have fought hardest to protect involves the expansion of voting by mail across the country. Doing so would eliminate the need for waiting in line or among a crowd of people and reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19 to others while casting a vote.
But Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) says that allowing people to vote by mail would be the end of the United States as we know it.
Yes, he actually said that, even posting it on Twitter for the entire world to see:
Universal vote by mail would be the end of our republic as we know it. https://t.co/NSqodOXsxx

The end our republic as we know it? If you were looking for proof that Republicans don’t want people to vote, Congressman Massie just provided it.
Massie’s ludicrous declaration was met with ire and mockery on social media:
Mail theft can bring five years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000. I guess that might put off some of your gerrymandering stooges? ?

This is an amazing admission that Republicans can’t win without voter suppression.

Yeah god forbid everyone in the country could easily vote safely and conveniently from their homes. Wouldn’t want that.

If everyone voted, Republicans would be extinct. So I see where you’re coming from.

I’m glad republicans are at least openly admitting now that they view increased voter participation as an existential threat to their party.

Thomas Massie in 1920: Women voting would be the end of our republic as we know it.
Thomas Massie in 1865: Black people voting would be the end of our republic as we know it.

In fairness, @RepThomasMassie is right.
Universal vote by mail would end Massie’s and the @GOP’s ability to suppress voting. Their racist efforts to perpetuate voter suppression would be over. They’d hate that. Cheating is their only hope. Mail in voting ends it.
Bye Felicia.

Excuse me? Letting everyone vote even if they can’t physically show up at the polls would end the republic? Isn’t letting every person vote kind of, I don’t know, the basis of representative democracy?
