Nearly 17,000 Americans have died as a result of coronavirus pandemic, but President Donald Trump wants us all to pat him on the back because the stock market has had a few good days recently.
Friday morning, rather than updating the nation on COVID-19 or urging the American people to stand strong in the face of the death they see around them, Trump bragged about the Dow Jones Industrial Average:
This week, in only 4 days, we had the biggest Stock Market increase since 1974. We have a great chance for the really big bounce when the Invisible Enemy is gone!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 10, 2020
Be sure and notice that the president conveniently neglected to mention that 10 of the largest stock market drops in U.S. history also took place on his watch and 10 percent of the American workforce has filed for unemployment.
Reaction to Trump’s tone-deaf tweet was immediate and harsh:
Over 16,000 people died you ghoul

The stock market is not a true reflection of the economy. There’s almost 20 million people out of work and 500,000 people who are homeless and 1 in 7 are food insecure.

16,676 Americans have died since you started lying to them about this virus.
The enemy is visible and we’re voting your behind out in November.

And the single largest DROP is the StockMarkets!! Everything gained in the last 4 years was wiped out in just a few days! Worse than the last depression/recession!! Most small stock market investors were wiped out! So please shut up!!

Pretty weird how the stock market shoots up while millions of people are losing their jobs. Great system!

We have people’s bodies stacked up on refrigerator trucks and being buried in mass graves at the moment. But sure. You go on with your dreamy stock market bullshit and your total and complete denial as to what’s happening here.

No testing, 1000’s dead, no PPE, not enough vents but wow, look at my 401 K.

Just when you think Donald Trump cannot possibly be more heartless and narcissistic, he lowers the bar yet again.
