Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said Thursday that he believes there’s a very good chance President Donald Trump will attempt to delay or postpone the 2020 election.

During an online event, according to CNN, Biden remarked:

“Mark my words: I think he is gonna try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it can’t be held.”

The former vice president also noted that Trump is already “all he can to make it very hard for people to vote” and pointed to the fact that the president has refused to adequately fund the U.S. Postal Service:

“Now what in God’s name is that about? Other than trying to let the word out that he’s going to do all he can to make it very hard for people to vote. That’s the only way he thinks he can possibly win.”

Trump cannot delay or cancel the election. Only Congress has that power. And even if the election were delayed, Trump’s term in office would automatically end on January 20, 2021. If no election had been held by that time, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) would then be sworn in as acting head of state.

Biden also referenced the recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court which forced primary voters in Wisconsin to cast ballots in person rather than being given the option to cast an absentee vote:

“Republicans were trying to force in-person voting no matter the health cost. We have to figure out how we are going to conduct a full and fair and safe election in November, and no one should have to risk their lives to cast a ballot.

“The idea you had all the governors and so many mayors — Republican and Democrat — asking the President and asking (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell, ‘We need local funding for our local support, for the things we have to do.’ I think it’s absolutely mindless, mindless, that they are unwilling to do it. I don’t get it. I don’t get it.”

Recent polls show Trump losing to Biden in a head-to-head matchup, especially in key battleground states such as Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, all of which were instrumental in Trump’s unexpected win in 2016.
