Former President Barack Obama released a poignant statement on the recent killing of George Floyd by a white police officer, showing President Donald trump how it’s done.
Protests have broken out in Minneapolis and elsewhere following Floyd’s death. The officers involved have not been arrested or charged, which has only angered the black community and resulted in riots in response to the injustice.
But rather than attempt to calm the waters, Trump has tried to politicize Floyd’s death by using it as a chance to divide the nation, all while threatening to order the National Guard to shoot and kill protesters he refers to as “thugs.”
….These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!

And so, Obama released his own statement:
“This shouldn’t be ‘normal’ in 2020 America. It can’t be ‘normal.’ If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better,” Obama said on Twitter.
“It will fall mainly on the officials of Minnesota to ensure that the circumstances surrounding George Floyd’s death are investigated thoroughly and that justice is ultimately done,” he continued. “But it falls on all of us, regardless of our race or station — including the majority of men and women in law enforcement who take pride in doing their tough job the right way, every day — to work together to create a ‘new normal’ in which the legacy of bigotry and unequal treatment no longer infects our institutions or our hearts.”

At a time when our nation is rudderless at the top, it’s nice to know that President Obama is still willing to step up in an effort to heal our and unite our country despite how disrespectfully he has been treated by Trump and Republicans.
