In a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court, six justices agreed that the 1964 Civil Rights Act prevents LGBT people from being fired over their sexual orientation or gender identity. And conservatives really lost their sh*t when they learned Justice Neil Gorsuch authored the majority opinion.

As you will recall, President Donald Trump picked Gorsuch to replace the late-Justice Antonin Scalia after Senate Republicans refused to give a hearing to former President Obama’s pick for the court back in 2016.

And so, Trump nominated and the Senate quickly confirmed Gorsuch believing that he would lock in their right-wing agenda for years to come.

But when it comes to discrimination against the LGBT community, Gorsuch sided against conservatives.

“In Title VII, Congress adopted broad language making it illegal for an employer to rely on an employee’s sex when deciding to fire that employee,” Gorsuch wrote in the majority opinion. “We do not hesitate to recognize today a necessary consequence of that legislative choice: An employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender defies the law.”

Gorsuch and Chief Justice John Roberts joined the four liberal justices in the ruling.

The ruling came as a shocking victory for the LGBT community at a time when the high court is seen as decidedly conservative. But it especially shocked conservatives who were hoping their discrimination against gay people would be legalized with a ruling in their favor.

That did not come to pass, so they are now lashing out at Trump’s appointee for authoring the majority ruling, even going so far as to call him a “traitor.”

Even Justice Samuel Alito attacked Gorsuch.

It’s pretty clear that discrimination against LGBT people in the workplace is wrong and is illegal. Gorsuch and Roberts did the right thing here. Evangelicals are losing what’s left of their tiny narrow minds because of it. And that’s just a bonus in what has turned out to be one of the best days of 2020.
