President Donald Trump crossed a red line on Monday by publicly accusing former President Barack Obama of committing treason.
Trump hurled the accusation during an interview with a Christian publication in which he whined about the Obama administration and claimed without offering any evidence that Obama spied on his 2016 campaign.
Of course, Trump has repeatedly made this claim even though it has been repeatedly debunked.
In 2016, the FBI suspected that the Russians had infiltrated the Trump campaign. And so, federal agents investigated.
The target was Russia and anyone working with Russia against our democracy, not Trump or his campaign directly.
There certainly wasn’t any “spying” on him either.
Even former Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) admitted on Fox News that after reviewing Trump’s claims he concluded that there was no spying.
That was two years ago, but now Trump is not only continuing to beat a dead horse, but he’s also going even further by accusing a former president of committing treason.
“It’s treason,” Trump said. “Look, when I came out a long time ago, I said they’ve been spying on my campaign. I said they’ve been taping, and that was in quotes, meaning a modern-day version of taping, it’s all the same thing. But a modern-day version. But they’ve been spying on my campaign.”
Again, there was no spying.
Trump then lamented that the modern punishment for treason is not execution.
“If it was the opposite, two years ago, 25 people would have been convicted and they would be sent to jail for 50 years. And by the way, if it were 100 years ago, or 50 years ago, they would have been executed, but we’re in a different time,” he said. “We’re in a different time. You understand what I mean by that. They spied on the opposing party’s campaign and we caught them. I just hope I get tremendous evangelical Christian support.”
Trump literally just falsely accused a man of treason and expressed disappointment that Obama wouldn’t be killed for it, yet he expects the evangelical community to continue backing him? Clearly, Trump knows he has evangelicals eating out of his hand if he can lie and promote execution and still count on their support.
For the last time, Obama did not spy on Trump’s campaign and there is absolutely no evidence that Obama ever committed a crime in office. However, Trump may have committed several crimes in office, including what one could consider treason on at least two occasions in the last year alone as Trump tried to get Ukraine and China to help him win re-election even though foreign interference in our elections is strictly forbidden.
If anyone should be arrested and prosecuted for treason against the United States right now, it’s more likely to be Trump.
