In an attempt to smear Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), also known as AOC, conservatives invented and spread a fake tweet in which she supposedly calls for keeping businesses shut down to hurt President Donald Trump.
AOC has strongly advocated for keeping non-essential businesses shut down for the benefit of public health during the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed over 120,000 Americans. What she has not done is call for them to be closed to hurt Trump in November.
But conservatives began pushing the tweet this week ahead of her primary race in New York.
The fake tweet reads:
It’s vital that Governors maintain restrictions on businesses until after the November Elections because economic recovery will help Trump be re-elected. A few business closures or job losses is a small price to pay to be free from this presidency. #KeepUsClosed.
Right-wing radio hosts Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin, both of whom regularly kiss Trump’s a**, immediately seized upon the tweet to attack AOC.
But fact-checkers quickly debunked it.
“It does not appear in her Twitter timeline, nor was it recorded by databases that capture and preserve deleted tweets,” Snopes ruled according to Media Matters.
The fraudulent tweet appears to have just begun spreading on Tuesday, based on a Twitter search, as well as a quick look at posts on Facebook and Instagram. Interestingly enough, the supposed screen grab depicts the message as having been posted over a month ago, on May 20, and to have been retweeted over 25,000 times — and yet, nobody seems to have learned of it until today.
It might also be worth pointing out that the purported Ocasio-Cortez tweet exhibited the kind of irregular capitalization often employed by Trump — perhaps inspiring his devotees to do the same — rather than what is typically found on the representative’s own account.
Ocasio-Cortez herself condemned the scheme.
I usually don’t tweet to correct fake posts about me bc the right circulates so many, but needless to say the alleged “deleted” reopening tweet people are saying I wrote is a photoshopped fake being circulated by Republicans.
They tell lies because the truth isn’t on their side. https://t.co/WQxMxCJofe

Despite the fake tweet, AOC still won her primary race by a landslide with 72 percent of the vote and will likely beat the hell out of her Republican opponent in her majority Democratic district. In the end, the last laugh was hers while conservatives have egg on their faces.
