It would be a beautiful dream come true to some American’s ears, and a nightmare to others. Fox News is reporting that if Trump’s poll numbers continue to slide, he may drop out of the POTUS race instead of losing to Joe Biden.

Everyone knows Trump has an obsession with winning. He talks about it all the time, even when he is supposed to be talking about other things. He magnifies even the smallest of victories. But perhaps more importantly, he hates losing.

Fox describes the President’s demeanor as “fragile” as his numbers continue to slide. Joe Biden now averages a 9 point lead over Trump in the 2020 race, with some recent polls putting Biden’s lead up to 14 points.

Charles Gasparino, the author of the Fox News report, said in a series of tweets that he had spoken to “major players” in the Republican party for the story. One of them described Mr. Trump’s mood as “fragile” as his chances of a second-term looked increasingly dim.

Another of the GOP sources cited in the report said of the likelihood that Mr. Trump will drop out: “I’ve heard the talk but I doubt it’s true. My bet is, he drops if he believes there’s no way to win.”

Most critics have cited a falling out with older voters as the source of Trump’s falling numbers. Perhaps that is due to his denial of the dangers of the COVID-19 virus and continued missteps in leading the country during the pandemic crisis. It also could be due to his increasingly harsh and callous statements on race. Trump has attempted to demonize protesters and ignore police atrocities. That might not sit well with seniors who can still remember the demonization of civil rights and “hippie” protesters in the 1960s when they were the “rebellious youth” calling for change.

Maybe they are just tired of the past 3 and a half years being full of incompetence and broken promises from Team Trump. It is tough for even Trump to square the circle of “hiring only the best people” when they come in, but suddenly become “incompetent” and “losers” after they leave with remarkable consistency.

Many have accused the current POTUS of being a narcissist and dropping out would be more typical of such a person rather than suffer a humiliating defeat to a man he ridiculed and demeaned when he learned that Biden would be his opponent in November.

Psychology Today tells us what is in the mind of a narcissist and what they fear the most:

When a narcissist feels that she’s losing face or failing at something in front of an audience, it creates a lot of psychological distress and cognitive dissonance. Narcissists are unable to tolerate failure of any sort and public humiliation is considered the worst type of failure that could happen. A narcissist’s ego is an extremely fragile thing and when she feels she is being laughed at or is losing the respect of others, it can be tremendously upsetting. The narcissist’s ego is the only protection they have from the world and when their ego integrity is breached, narcissists often respond in ways that seem markedly out of proportion to the circumstances for average people.

Despite the Fox report, there is still no clear indication that Trump will drop out of the POTUS race. Politically speaking, if he was to drop out, he would need to do so early enough for another candidate to have time to successfully campaign. That makes Mike Pence’s recent penchant for making public appearances much more interesting.

It would be quite ironic if Trump, who was bragging that he “couldn’t lose” his POTUS re-election bid all winter and spring, were to drop out if he saw zero chance of winning in November.
