Many Republicans who oppose President Donald Trump (often called never-Trumpers) not only want to take him down in November, they want to burn the entire GOP to the ground by helping Democrats take back the Senate.
As Trump’s poll numbers continue to crater against former Vice President Joe Biden, The Never-Trumpers are declaring war on Senate Republicans in an effort to force a fundamental change within the party so that Trumpism does not linger on as a major force.
That means these Republicans, including the likes of Steve Schmidt, George Conway, Rick Wilson, Joe Walsh, and Jennifer Horn among many others actually want Democrats to become the Senate majority.
The reason why is because the party won’t turn away from Trump’s toxicity unless it suffers a massive defeat that forces it to hit reboot.
“The analogy would be in the same way that fire purifies the forest, it needs to be burned to the ground and fundamentally repudiated,” former GOP strategist and The Lincoln Project member Steve Schmidt told McClatchy. “Every one of them should be voted out of office, with the exception of Mitt Romney.”
Indeed, Romney happens to be the only Republican senator who had the spine to vote to convict and remove Trump during the impeachment. The rest of the Republicans voted to acquit Trump is what most consider to be a rigged trial.
Jennifer Horn, an adviser to The Lincoln Project, blasted Republicans as “the only human beings who had the authority and the ability to keep this president in check constitutionally and politically — and every one of them made a conscious decision to not do so. The only way to make sure that Trumpism doesn’t continue to rule the Republican Party for years to come is to make sure that we defeat not only the president, but those people who have enabled him.”
Obviously, many of these seats are safe in the deepest of red states that are devoted to Trump, but many others are not, especially in Arizona, North Carolina, Maine, Colorado, and other states.
“Trump has to lose, and every Republican senator up for reelection has to lose because they’ve enabled (him),” former GOP congressman Joe Walsh said in his capacity as founding member of anti-Trump group The Bravery Project. “Do I want the Democrats to take control of the Senate? No, but I have no choice. To me, these Republicans like Martha McSally and Thom Tillis and Susan Collins have breached their office. It means the Democrats will be in control of D.C., and they will try to push policies I disagree with. That will leave someone like me fighting against their policies. I don’t look forward to that, but that will be the necessary result.”
Walsh has severely criticized Senate Republicans for bowing down to Trump instead of ousting him from office when they had the chance.
But while all of these Never-Trumpers were helpless to prevent Trump from being elected in 2016 or actually voted him, they are organized now and that’s something Trump and Senate Republicans should fear.
