Former Republican Senator Rick Santorum got slapped down by Democratic strategist Bakari Sellers on CNN Tuesday morning when Santorum made a tasteless and incorrect analogy comparing abortion to slavery.

During a debate about the removal of monuments to those who owned slaves, Santorum tried to suggest that Sellers and others who want statues and other tributes to Confederate “heroes” taken down should learn to live when them, the same way that conservatives have to live with abortion being legal in the United States:

“I have a hard time reconciling people who are allowing people to be killed in the womb, but you know what, I do, and we all do. And we all have to reconcile things that we have differences about.”

Sellers immediately responded to Santorum, remarking:

“Slavery and abortion are not the same things.”

But Santorum refused to yield, doubling down on his absurd comparison:

“Yes it is!”

Sellers had the perfect comeback to the former senator:

“That’s like apples and bobcats. There’s nothing the same about slavery and abortion… If there is a mother who is about to die or if she is raped or the victim of incest and she makes a decision, Rick, that’s not the same thing as dragged over here against your will!”

Exactly! Taking people away from their homeland, putting them on ships, and sending them to a country where they’re forced to be subservient to another man just because of their skin color is absolutely nothing like the right to choose. For one thing, abortion is legal and has repeatedly been ruled so by the Supreme Court. Slavery, on the other hand, is illegal and has also been declared against the law by the high court.

If Rick Santorum, President Donald Trump and other conservatives want to continue to defend traitors who fought against their own country to preserve their right to own other human beings, then that’s a debate Democrats should welcome. Because it’s a losing issue for the GOP and will guarantee they are wiped out on Election Day.
