Former heads of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) came together to pen a brutal op-ed blasting President Donald Trump for undermining health experts as the country continues to suffer through the coronavirus pandemic.

Nobody should be listening to Trump when it comes to public health and safety during a pandemic. Clearly, he does not care about the lives of Americans and he certainly does not care about the lives of children, whom he expects to go right back to school later this year despite the risk that many will likely die.

But Trump has constantly undermined health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci in an effort to insist that everything is fine and that the pandemic is somehow ending even though our nation is setting new records of infection every single day. Even Europe is banning Americans from traveling there because Trump’s response has been so reckless.

The death toll has now reached 138,000 and rising while infections are nearing 3 million. It’s a complete disaster, which is why four former CDC directors called Trump out in an op-ed on Tuesday.

“The CDC is home to thousands of experts who for decades have fought deadly pathogens such as HIV, Zika and Ebola,” Tom Frieden, Jeffrey Koplan, David Satcher, and Richard Besser wrote for the Washington Post. “Despite the inevitable challenges of evolving science and the public’s expectation of certainty, these are the people best positioned to help our country emerge from this crisis as safely as possible. Unfortunately, their sound science is being challenged with partisan potshots, sowing confusion and mistrust at a time when the American people need leadership, expertise and clarity. These efforts have even fueled a backlash against public health officials across the country: Public servants have been harassed, threatened and forced to resign when we need them most. This is unconscionable and dangerous.”

“Trying to fight this pandemic while subverting scientific expertise is like fighting blindfolded,” they concluded. “How well and how quickly we adhere to the advice of public health experts at the CDC will determine whether, how soon and how safely our schools can reopen. It is not too late to give the CDC its proper role in guiding this response. But the clock is ticking.”

Actually, it’s probably already too late. There’s no stopping this pandemic now. Trump and his supporters have turned this into a “survival of the fittest” situation. They are willing to sacrifice anyone in their effort to pretend all is well, especially if it helps Wall Street continue getting richer. Trump should have listened to the experts months ago and he should be listening to them now. But he won’t, and that means more death until we can finally be rid of him.
