President Donald Trump just got busted for once again using the office of the presidency in an attempt to enrich himself and his businesses by pressuring the American ambassador to Britain to approach the British government about letting his Scotland golf course host the British Open.

The British Open is the most notable professional golf tournament in the United Kingdom. It not only brings in lots of money, but it also brings in television ratings and would generate profit and publicity for Trump’s property, especially since golfers and others would likely stay at his resort.

Back in 2018, Trump wanted this tournament to be played on his Scotland golf course, which is why he asked the top American diplomat in the United Kingdom to make it happen.

According to the New York Times:

The American ambassador to Britain, Robert Wood Johnson IV, told multiple colleagues in February 2018 that President Trump had asked him to see if the British government could help steer the world-famous and lucrative British Open golf tournament to the Trump Turnberry resort in Scotland, according to three people with knowledge of the episode.

The ambassador’s deputy, Lewis A. Lukens, advised him not to do it, warning that it would be an unethical use of the presidency for private gain, these people said. But Mr. Johnson apparently felt pressured to try. A few weeks later, he raised the idea of Turnberry playing host to the Open with the secretary of state for Scotland, David Mundell.

This is a serious scandal that compromises Johnson and makes it clear that Trump only cares about personally profiting off of the presidency instead of working to help the American people. Obviously, Trump did not get what he wanted, and that makes one wonder if that’s a reason why he has been rather cold toward our longtime ally. It also means he can be bought, which is a threat to our independence and security.

Diplomats should certainly not be used to procure business favors for the president. They have more important matters to attend to that affect national security, trade, and a host of other issues that have an impact on American lives at home and abroad. Americans should be outraged that Trump used a diplomat in this way. How many more American diplomats around the globe has Trump pressured to do business on his behalf?

This misconduct should be fully investigated by Congress, and frankly, Trump should be removed from office. This is not how a president is supposed to conduct themselves.
