With just weeks before Election Day, Senator Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) sharply lambasted President Donald Trump in a devastating response to being asked why he criticizes him.

Sasse, while largely subservient to Trump, especially when it comes to his judicial nominees, has also not completely cowered before him like his GOP colleagues in that he is not afraid to admit that Trump is “deficient not just for a Republican but for an American.”

Indeed, Trump’s behavior over the last four years has been atrocious and decidedly unpresidential. In fact, it’s un-American.

During an interview, Sasse pointed out some of Trump’s most egregious behavior.

“The way he kisses dictators’ butts,” Sasse said. “I mean, the way he ignores the Uighurs, our literal concentration camps in Xinjiang. Right now, he hasn’t lifted a finger on behalf of the Hong-Kongers.”

“The United States now regularly sells out our allies under his leadership,” Sasse continued. “The way he treats women, spends like a drunken sailor. The ways I criticize President Obama for that kind of spending, I’ve criticized President Trump for, as well. He mocks evangelicals behind closed doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. He’s flirted with white supremacists.”

It’s true. Trump reportedly mocked evangelicals behind their backs for praying for him after a meeting. Yet, evangelicals are still sticking with him.

And during the first presidential debate, Trump refused to denounce white supremacist groups, instead telling them to “stand by.”

Sasse also slammed Trump’s reckless handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed over 210,000 Americans since February and for killing the economy in the process.

“First, he ignored COVID, and then he went into full economic shutdown mode. He was the one who said 10 to 14 days of shutdown would fix this, and that was always wrong,” Sasse said. “And so I don’t think the way he’s led through COVID has been reasonable, or responsible or right.”

Frankly, the economy should have been shut down for a lot longer than that, and Senate Republicans should have passed a larger stimulus package to keep Americans afloat instead of pouring money into the piggy banks of the rich.

Of course, Sasse could put his money where his mouth is and endorse Biden over Trump right now. Until then, he’s all talk. But he also voted to acquit Trump in a rigged impeachment trial even though the evidence against Trump was clear. At that moment Sasse sold out America and demonstrated that he has no values, just like Trump.
