The Senate confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court by the slimmest of margins in a partisan vote that angered the nation further on Monday night. And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) bragged about it.

The death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg just weeks before Election Day came back to bite Republicans as they were immediately reminded that they have argued that a new Justice cannot be confirmed during an election year. But they quickly changed their minds and moved to seize complete control of the high court, this time only seven days before the nation goes to the polls, with tens of millions of votes already cast.

McConnell and Senate Republicans ran a pathetic confirmation process that ignored Barrett’s lack of judicial experience and her membership in a religious sect that believes women should be oppressed by men.

Barrett largely refused to answer or could not answer basic questions, even dodging the question of whether President Donald Trump can cancel or delay the election. Her past also makes it clear that her rulings on the court will focus on keeping Republicans in power, by hook or by crook.

Make no mistake, Republicans orchestrated a coup to take over the court, not just to help them win elections, but to force their agenda upon the nation. After the 52-48 vote to confirm Barrett, McConnell took to Twitter to gloat.

Barrett was not an “impressive” nominee and her confirmation is illegitimate according to precedent that Republicans established in 2016.

Americans shamed McConnell in response.

The only move Democrats have now is to expand the Supreme Court and nullify the conservative majority by turning it into a minority. The number of judges on the bench is determined by Congress and has changed several times before. With control of the Senate and House, Democrats could simply pass a bill expanding the court and Joe Biden would get to nominate all of the new judges if he becomes president. It’s the only way unless Democrats get a super-majority in the Senate capable of impeaching at least two of Trump’s picks, Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Barrett being the obvious choices.

This is war. Republicans will clearly do anything to control the court and stay in power. Democrats need to fight back and they can do it by exercising the constitutional authority of Congress and do it just as ruthlessly as Republicans have been abusing it.
