There were only five people who voted in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire at midnight but the tiny township unanimously voted for former Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump.

The tradition of being one of the first election results in the nation goes back to 1960 when Dixville Notch residents voted for Richard Nixon over John F. Kennedy, which also happened to be the last unanimous result in the township. Of course, Kennedy would go on to defeat Nixon for the presidency, so a result one way or another does not guarantee victory for either candidate.

Just ask Hillary Clinton, who beat Trump in Dixville Notch by a 4-2 vote only to lose the 2016 Election, and America has been losing ever since.

But Dixville Notch did go for former President Barack Obama in 2008, and now they have unanimously voted for Biden this year.

Is it an omen that Trump will have a bad day and America will finally end the four-year long nightmare we have been suffering? It’s hard to tell. Dixville Notch certainly is not a crystal ball that can predict the overall results, but it can give Americans hope and inspire them to cast their own vote to help bring Trump down.

This contest needs to be a landslide for Biden. Needless to say, even that won’t stop Trump from trying to steal the election by challenging votes in every swing state. He’s made it clear that he intends to declare victory before all the votes are counted and that he will send in lawyers if he doesn’t get his way. He’s even barricading himself inside the White House and has said he won’t concede, nor will he commit to a peaceful transition of power.

But that’s why it’s so important that every eligible American voter who has not cast a ballot yet should do so, even if they have to crawl over coronavirus-infected glass to do so. Because the wider the margin that Trump loses by, the harder it will be for him to challenge the results. America can be saved from its current predicament. We just have to believe and take action in support of that belief to make it a reality. Dixville Notch did. Now the rest of the nation needs to do the same.
