In what could wind up being the ultimate case of cutting off one’s nose to spite the face, Trump supporters are posting messages on the conservative social media site Parler urging Republicans in the state of Georgia to boycott the upcoming runoff election to decide two U.S. Senate seats and control of the upper chamber of Congress.

Journalist Marcus Baram reports that the Trump faithful believe Georgia was stolen from the incumbent president and they want voters to either refuse to participate in the runoff election or write in Trump’s name. If either strategy is employed by even a small percentage of Republicans in the Peach State, it could hand the two Senate races to Democrats:

The Georgia GOP is already engaged in what can best be called a political civil war, according to the New York Times:

“Republicans in Georgia and elsewhere are now faced with a stark choice. They can stick by Mr. Trump and his rash claims of fraud, and risk alienating moderate voters who may have had their fill of Trumpism — including the thousands who helped turn Georgia blue this month. Or they can break with Mr. Trump, invite his wrath and risk throwing the political equivalent of a wet blanket on conservative turnout for the Senate runoffs in January.”

Meanwhile, Trump continues to insist that he beat Joe Biden in Georgia and should be awarded the state’s 16 electoral votes. But the state’s Republican governor and secretary of state said Friday following a statewide hand recount of votes that there had been no irregularities and that Georgia’s electoral votes would go to Biden, with Gov. Brian Kemp remarking:

“State law now requires the governor’s office to formalize the certification, which paves the way for the Trump campaign to pursue other legal options and a separate recount if they choose. As governor, I have a solemn responsibility to follow the law, and that is what I will do.”
