The 126 House Republicans who signed on to a lawsuit demanding the Supreme Court overturn the election in favor of outgoing President Donald Trump were scolded by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) this week, putting them one step closer to perhaps being denied their seats when the new Congress convenes.

President-Elect Joe Biden is the rightful and legally elected next president, but Texas demanded that the Supreme Court overturn the election results in the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Georgia and declare Trump the winner even though no evidence of election fraud exists.

18 states joined the lawsuit and 126 House Republicans signed a legal brief in support of it. But the high court unanimously shut the scheme down.

In response, Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), issued a statement asking Democratic House leaders to invoke Section III of the 14th Amendment and refuse to seat every Republican who tried to subvert the Constitution and democracy.

It’s a legitimate action House leaders can take to punish House Republicans for their seditious behavior.

On Friday, Pelosi appeared to be moving in that direction by also calling out Republicans for subverting the Constitution.

“The Court has rightly dismissed out of hand the extreme, unlawful and undemocratic GOP lawsuit to overturn the will of millions of American voters,” Pelosi said in a statement before tearing into House Republicans.

“The 126 Republican Members that signed onto this lawsuit brought dishonor to the House,” Pelosi declared. “Instead of upholding their oath to support and defend the Constitution, they chose to subvert the Constitution and undermine public trust in our sacred democratic institutions. The pandemic is raging, with nearly 300,000 having died and tens of millions having lost jobs. Strong, unified action is needed to crush the virus, and Republicans must once and for all end their election subversion – immediately.”

It’s certainly a strong statement, but Pelosi must follow it up by refusing to seat all 126 House Republicans when the new Congress convenes in January. Just as Trump must face consequences for his criminal behavior and abuse of power, all of these Republicans must face consequences as well. This move to overthrow the Constitution must not go unpunished or else Republicans will try to do it again in the future. In fact, House Republicans are reportedly going to try subverting the Constitution on the House floor next month by refusing to deny Biden’s victory. As House Speaker, Pelosi has the power to stop this and she has the Constitution on her side. Democrats cannot let Republicans get away with their sedition. It’s time for them to get tough and crack down on those who are literally trying to institute a dictatorship in this free nation.
