Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) strongly rebuked President Donald Trump’s failure to condemn the Russian cyberattack on U.S. government agencies and warned the intrusion could have serious repercussions for basic utility services such as electricity and water.

During an appearance on “Meet the Press,” Romney told host Chuck Todd:

“It is an extraordinary invasion of our cyberspace.

“They basically have the capacity to know what we’re doing. They even got into the agency that’s responsible for our nuclear capacities, for our research with regards to nuclear weaponry. This is an extraordinarily damaging invasion. And it went on for a long, long time.”

Indeed, Russian hackers allied with the Kremlin managed to penetrate the U.S Treasury and Commerce Departments, along with other agencies which control American infrastructure, meaning, as Romney noted, that Russia knows exactly what’s happening inside some of the most sensitive computer databases in the world. According to Huff Post, Romney ominously warned:

The hack has “enormous national security implications,” citing Russia’s ability to potentially “cripple” the U.S. economically and “with regards to our water and electricity and so forth.”

But rather than criticize Russia, Trump attempted to blame China, the Associated Press notes:

“The Cyber Hack is far greater in the Fake News Media than in actuality. I have been fully briefed and everything is well under control,” Trump tweeted. He also claimed the media are “petrified” of “discussing the possibility that it may be China (it may!).”

Asked about that, Romney remarked:

“I think we’ve come to recognize that the president has a blind spot when it comes to Russia. And the reality here is that the experts, the people who really understand how our systems work and how computers work and software and so forth, the thousands upon thousands of the CIA and the NSA and the Department of Defense have determined that this came from Russia.”

Imagine you wake up one morning to realize that your electric and water service are both off. Now imagine they stay off for weeks on end. Would that constitute a crisis for you and your family? Well, rest assured Donald Trump doesn’t give a damn. He’s too busy kissing Putin’s butt and looking the other way no matter how Russia attacks us.
