As outgoing President Donald Trump continues his effort to sabotage the incoming Biden administration, it now appears that Twitter is aiding him by refusing to transfer current White House social media accounts.
Back in 2017, former President Barack Obama insisted that Twitter transition the active @WhiteHouse, @POTUS, @FLOTUS, and @PressSec accounts to the Trump administration. As a result, Trump had the benefit of being able to reach tens of millions of Americans on the platform without having to start from scratch and Twitter merely made duplicate archived accounts to preserve a record of Obama administration tweets.
But President-Elect Joe Biden is being refused the same courtesy.
Rather than transfer the accounts to Biden’s team, Twitter and/or Trump are forcing Biden to start from scratch. In short, Biden and his team will start with zero Twitter followers on all of the above mentioned accounts, effectively kneecapping the Biden administration on social media from the outset as he prepares to take office on January 20th.
Trump, however won’t get to keep the current accounts for himself so he can pretend to be president. Those will be archived and will no longer be active once Biden is sworn in.

In 2020, Twitter has informed us that as of right now the Biden administration will have to start from zero. https://t.co/wj1R02SmiK

Still, it’s a really unacceptable way for Twitter to treat Biden. After all, these accounts should not have to start from scratch, especially since Trump didn’t have to do so himself. The double standard treatment is enough to make repealing Section 230 sound like it might be a good idea after all. If Twitter can’t play fair when a Democrat takes office, then they are part of the problem and should be subject to major regulations.
Apparently, Twitter is reportedly still engaged in “ongoing discussions” with Biden’s team about the transfers, but the fact that this has to be a big fight at all when the nation is dealing with a pandemic that has killed over 300,000 Americans makes it all the more shameful. Trump didn’t have to start from scratch, neither should Biden. It’s that simple.
