The Presidential Medal of Freedom is supposed to be awarded to the most distinguished and worthy of American citizens, but outgoing President Donald Trump has rendered it worthless by giving it to Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) as a reward for being good lackeys.

When we think about the Presidential Medal of Freedom, we think of trailblazers such as Helen Keller or Edward R. Murrow. Perhaps we think of Bob Hope or Neil Armstrong or Billie Jean King or Maya Angelou. Or even John Glenn, John Lewis, and Sally Ride.

Not every American who has been awarded the medal has necessarily deserved it. After all, the likes of Bill Cosby, Rush Limbaugh, and Dick Cheney have also received it.

Limbaugh certainly never deserved it, but Trump gave it to him anyway. The award lost much of its luster at that moment, and now Trump is disgracing it again.

According to Axios:

Trump is expected to give Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) the Presidential Medal of Freedom, three sources familiar with the plans tell Axios.

These key Trump allies both played crucial roles during Trump’s impeachment hearings. Nunes, who’s expected to get [the] medal Monday, launched a fierce attack on Democrats at Trump’s impeachment hearing that helped set the stage for the GOP argument that it was partisan and unfair and an extension of the 2016 Russia investigation.

Jordan, who is expected to receive his medal next week, led Republicans’ defense of the president at the hearing.

Jordan also signed on to a letter demanding an immediate Congressional investigation into the “integrity of the 2020 election” after Trump sought to discredit President-elect Biden’s win.

In short, Trump is rewarding two of his top minions. Nunes and Jordan certainly do not deserve such an award. Jordan has been implicated in the Ohio State sexual misconduct scandal and Nunes has filed multiple lawsuits in a scheme to curtail freedom of speech, not exactly the kind of behavior one would expect from recipients of a medal with “freedom” literally in the name.

Nunes and Jordan have also worked tirelessly in defense of Russia, which most certainly should disqualify them from receiving the medal since one of the criteria is that the recipient performed a “meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States,” which Jordan and Nunes have NOT done. They deny that Russia interfered with the 2016 Election and repeatedly obstructed and sabotaged the Russia investigation. They are also currently orchestrating a coup to keep Trump in power.

Either of them receiving the medal is insulting and it should be taken from them and made clear that they didn’t deserve it. If not, the award is meaningless.
