Outgoing President Donald Trump could find himself the subject of a major FBI probe if House Democrats have their way in the wake of a recorded phone call busting Trump for trying to extort Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger into rigging the election for him.
The recording features Trump threatening Raffensperger and demanding that he wrangle up exactly 11,780 votes, just one more than President-Elect Joe Biden’s margin of victory, for him so he can win the state.
Trump not only committed extortion, he attempted to tamper with the results of the election by asking Raffensperger to “recalculate” the votes in his favor even though multiple recounts and audits confirm that Biden won.
Americans have been outraged by the phone call, going so far as to call for Trump to be impeached a second time and to be prosecuted.
Well, Reps. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) sent a letter to the FBI requesting an immediate investigation.
“The President of the United States, in an approximately one-hour-long phone call, threatened and berated Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to ‘find 11,780 votes’ to overturn the President’s defeat in the state,” Lieu and Rice wrote. “As Members of Congress and former prosecutors, we believe Donald Trump engaged in solicitation of, or conspiracy to commit, a number of election crimes. We ask you to open an immediate criminal investigation into the President. The evidence of election fraud by Mr. Trump is now in broad daylight. The prima facie elements of the above crimes have been met. Given the more than ample factual predicate, we are making a criminal referral to you to open an investigation into Mr. Trump.”
Indeed, Trump’s crimes are on tape for all to hear. The question is does FBI Director Christopher Wray have the spine to open an investigation or will Biden have to replace him with someone who will after January 20th? And remember, Trump can’t pardon himself so there’s no ‘get out of jail free’ card here.
In addition, Trump also made several election fraud allegations that were shot down one by one on Monday by Republican Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling, who is in charge of the voting systems in the state. He brutally condemned Trump’s claims and debunked them all during a press conference before slamming him for misleading the state Senate and the American people.
“This is what’s really frustrating: The president’s legal team had the entire tape,” Sterling said. “They watched the entire tape and, from our point of view, intentionally misled the state Senate, voters and the people of the United States about this. It was intentional. It was obvious. And anybody watching this knows that.”
The election in Georgia and every other swing state Trump is contesting was clean and free of fraud. Trump, however, has committed election fraud by trying to blackmail Raffensperger to rig the results in his favor. He should be arrested, prosecuted, and put in prison as soon as the clock strikes noon on January 20th.
