In a final act of pettiness, disgraced outgoing President Donald Trump has announced that he will not be attending the inauguration of President-Elect Joe Biden on January 20th.

Only a handful of lame duck presidents have refused to attend the inauguration of their successor, including John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Johnson. So, not since 1869 has an outgoing president refused to attend the inauguration of their successor. It had been a norm for 150 years, but now Trump is breaking it.

In one of the few tweets Trump has issued since Twitter lifted the block on his account in the wake of the insurrection at the Capitol on Wednesday, he began by once again inciting his supporters.

Of course, many of those voters likely now regret supporting him after the chaos he sowed this week in an attempted coup to overturn the election results. In the end, Congress did certify Biden’s victory and he will be sworn in as the next president. Trump, however, won’t be in attendance.

Clearly, Trump’s ego just would not be able to handle the humiliation of having to sit and watch his power disappear. He refuses to admit he lost and attending the inauguration would be just such an admission. It’s an act of pettiness that does not fit with an orderly transition.

Americans, however, have no problem with Trump not being there.

Trump likely has an ulterior motive for not attending the ceremony beyond just being a petty crybaby. After all, he’s on the hook for several federal crimes and likely wants to leave Washington DC or even flee the country before he can be arrested once Biden takes office, just one last embarrassing act from the worst president in history.
