In yet another pathetic display of hypocrisy, House Republicans are now begging Democrats to spare disgraced outgoing President Donald Trump from being impeached a second time in the wake of a deadly insurrection at the Capitol he instigated.

President-Elect Joe Biden has been preaching unity and healing since the beginning of his presidential campaign, but that did not stop Republicans from pushing false election fraud allegations, nor did it prevent them from openly objecting to Biden’s victory in Congress even as Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in a failed insurrection with the goal of overturning the election results.

Several Republican members of the House and Senate even supported the attempted coup, which has resulted in Democrats and Republicans calling for Trump to be removed from office. Articles of impeachment are set to be introduced in the House on Monday. If passed, Trump would be the only president in history to be impeached twice.

But now one group of Republicans consisting of Reps. Ken Buck (R-Co), Thomas Massie (R-Ky), Tom McClinton (R-Calif.), Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Chip Roy (R-Texas), Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.), and Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.) expect Biden to stop the proceedings and are disgustingly arguing that he should do so in the name of unity and healing.

“In the spirit of healing and fidelity to our Constitution, we ask that you formally request that Speaker Nancy Pelosi discontinue her efforts to impeach President Donald J. Trump a second time,” the group wrote in a letter. “A second impeachment, only days before President Trump will leave office, is as unnecessary as it is inflammatory. This impeachment would undermine our priority of unifying Americans and would be a further distraction to our nation at a time when millions of our fellow citizens are hurting because of the pandemic and economic fallout.”

Frankly, Republicans had their chance to support Biden’s message of healing and unity months ago and they refused. They are lucky Trump is not facing a firing squad for his treason. He absolutely deserves to be impeached and must be impeached because not doing so would send a message that Republicans can instigate insurrection without consequences. Besides, impeaching Trump would save taxpayers money since Trump would also lose his presidential pension, travel stipend, and Secret Service protection, all of which he should lose because he’s a traitor.

The only path forward to healing and unity is for Trump and all of his supporters to be punished for their actions. Justice must be served. If these Republicans really cared about law and order, they would understand that.
