Fox News host Tucker Carlson is being lit up on social media for comments he made Thursday evening on his show about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who said she feared for her life last week during the storming of the U.S. Capitol, when pro-Trump supporters rioted, killing five people, including a member of the Capitol Police.
Ocasio-Cortez (who often goes by the initials AOC) shared her experience of the January 6 riots in Instagram, remarking:
“It was not an exaggeration to say that many members of the House were nearly assassinated. Many of us, nearly and narrowly escaped death.”
That led Carlson to mock AOC’s very legitimate fear at the time of the Capitol siege, HuffPost reports:
“The Fox News personality fearmongered about ‘vacuous little totalitarian morons’ like Ocasio-Cortez wielding power. He also criticized the New York Democrat for thanking the police officers who protected Congress during the riot while at the same time supporting the call to ‘defund the police.’
“’Narrowly escaped death,’ Carlson sarcastically declared, mimicking Ocasio-Cortez’s description of the terrifying scenes that engulfed the Capitol.”
As if that wasn’t heartless and snide enough, the Fox host added:
“When the most harrowing thing in life is pass freshman sociology at Boston University, every day is a brand new drama. Sandy’s heart is still beating fast. But she likes the cops now, despite the fact they’re white supremacists. What a difference a day makes.”
Tucker, dude, what in the actual hell is that?! Anyone in their right mind would have been terrified if they’d seen thousands of enraged rioters invading their workplace and screaming for the blood of those who disagreed with them.
Carlson’s remarks were met with a furious pushback on Twitter, with NBC’s Mehdi Hassan leading off the rebuke of the Fox host:
Forget awful politics, this is just vile and vicious https://t.co/3J44CofHCM

It’s also sheer hypocrisy – Carlson famously made a song and dance on his show about an ‘attack’ on his home and his family which wasn’t an attack, but now says @AOC shouldn’t be afraid for her life as armed mobs with nooses *actually* attacked and looted her place of work.

Hasan was joined by others who also had some choice words for Carlson:
Mind you, Tucker just a few months ago was taking at face value the McCloskeys’ claims that BLM protesters were going to burn their house down and kill them… and has been repeating that ever since.

The infuriating thing about this is Carlton’s dismissing fears that are completely valid BECAUSE *he* keeps making her a lunatic target. https://t.co/LsiRgaRjln

This is broadcast hate speech, broadcast targeted harassment! There used to be rules!

Imagine Tucker Carlson walking in AOC’s shoes for one day. She’s been subject to this abuse and threat for years. She’s a strong woman. He’s a small man.

Tucker Carlson is a douchebag. It’s really just that simple.
