It’s pretty obvious that disgraced former President Donald Trump is a Russian asset and has been for some time. But now we know a lot more thanks to a former KGB official.
Trump never uttered a single bad word about Vladimir Putin in four years. He let Russia interfere with our elections. He let Russia intimidate Europe and NATO. He let Russia place bounties on the heads of American soldiers in Afghanistan. He let Russia launch a massive cyberattack against our government. And he withdrew our country from several treaties, moves that benefited Russia.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg as Trump sought to overthrow American democracy, wreck our economy, sabotage our national security, and allow a pandemic to sweep the country. Trump also leaked intelligence to Russian officials. There’s no question that Trump is a Russian puppet and that America was basically a Russian satellite state.
How long has Russia been cultivating Trump as an asset? It turns out that it all began in the 1980s according to former KGB official Yuri Shvets.
“For the KGB, it was a charm offensive,” Shvets told the Guardian. “They had collected a lot of information on his personality so they knew who he was personally. The feeling was that he was extremely vulnerable intellectually, and psychologically, and he was prone to flattery.”
Indeed, Trump visited St. Petersburg and Moscow in 1987, the same year Trump was photographed shaking hands with then-President Ronald Reagan, who was in the process of bringing an end to the Soviet Union. Apparently, the KGB refused to accept this and decided they might be able to use Trump to take down the United States.
Of course, it wasn’t like Russia necessarily sought to install Trump in the presidency. American Kompromat author Craig Unger told the Guardian that there was not a grand plan.
“It was not this grand, ingenious plan that we’re going to develop this guy and 40 years later he’ll be president,” he said. “At the time it started, which was around 1980, the Russians were trying to recruit like crazy and going after dozens and dozens of people.”
However, make no mistake, the Russians struck gold with Trump, who went on to take out space in several major newspapers to trash NATO and decry NATO funding. As we all know, Trump spent much of his presidency trying to weaken NATO and even threatened to withdraw the United States from the crucial national security alliance.
That alone was enough for celebration in Russia, as the Guardian noted.
The bizarre intervention was cause for astonishment and jubilation in Russia. A few days later Shvets, who had returned home by now, was at the headquarters of the KGB’s first chief directorate in Yasenevo when he received a cable celebrating the ad as a successful “active measure” executed by a new KGB asset.
Russia could not have predicted that Trump would be able to become president. But Putin, as a former KGB agent himself, likely would have been aware that Trump was an asset, which is why Russia interfered with the 2016 Election to install him in the White House. All of a sudden, Russia had an asset in the highest seat of power in the world and they set out to use him.
Trump did serious damage to our country in four years. It went beyond Russia’s wildest dreams. It’s as close as they’ve ever come to destroying us. Their plan is still unfolding. Many Republicans have Russian connections, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who is working to derail President Joe Biden and Democrats, and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who has defended Trump at every turn. Many of Trump’s most loyal defenders are Russophiles who are still planning future insurrection attempts. The Republican Party is not pro-America. It hasn’t been for some time. It’s a Russian asset, and Biden and the Democratic Party must do whatever is necessary to fight it.
