House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) torched House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in a scathing statement on Wednesday for refusing to punish QAnon Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
McCarthy has been under pressure to remove Greene for her committee assignments, which include the House Education Committee. Her presence on that particular committee is problematic since she has repeatedly bullied and threatened school shooting survivors.
Greene being in Congress in any capacity is insulting since she aided and cheered on the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol as part of a domestic terrorist attack that resulted in several deaths on January 6th. She’s also a racist and anti-Semite who posts hate speech and lies on Twitter. Oh, and she has advocated for assassinating Pelosi.
Americans across the country want her expelled from Congress, but McCarthy doesn’t even have the spine to remove her from committees. In fact, McCarthy not only stood up for Greene like a coward, he demanded Democrats remove some of their own members from committees citing false accusations.
“Past comments from and endorsed by Marjorie Taylor Greene on school shootings, political violence, and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories do not represent the values or beliefs of the House Republican Conference,” McCarthy said in a statement. “I condemn those comments unequivocally. While Democrats pursue a resolution on Congresswoman Greene, they continue to do nothing about Democrats serving on the Foreign Affairs Committee who have spread anti-Semitic tropes, Democrats on the House Intelligence and Homeland Security Committee compromised by Chinese spies, or the Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee who advocated for violence against public servants.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) did not spread anti-Semitic tropes. Republicans twisted her words to make it sound like she did. What Omar did do is criticize Israel, which is apparently a crime in Republican circles. Another difference between Omar and Greene is that Omar ended up apologizing to anyone she might have offended.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) did not know a woman involved with his fundraising efforts in 2014 was a Chinese spy. Upon being warned by federal agents, he ended his involvement with her, unlike Republicans who refuse to end their involvement with QAnon and Greene. It also appears Republicans leaked the story and made it a big deal in retaliation against Democrats over the Russia investigation.
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) never advocated for violence against public officials. She called for Trump officials to be publicly shunned, protested, and harassed for being garbage human beings. Greene, meanwhile, has literally called for killing Democrats.
All of the accusations made by McCarthy is mere false equivalency to defend a member of his party who is indefensible. And Pelosi threw the book at him for being a coward, even changing his party affiliation to QAnon.
“After several conversations and literally running away from reporters, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Q-CA), made clear that he is refusing to take action against conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene,” Pelosi said. “As a result, the House will continue with a vote to strip Greene of her seat on the esteemed House Committee on Education & Labor and House Committee on Budget. McCarthy’s failure to lead his party effectively hands the keys over to Greene — an anti-Semite, QAnon adherent and 9/11 Truther.”

McCarthy is disgraceful for continuing to support Greene. Clearly, the Republican Party is beholden to QAnon. It’s also clear that Republicans are already planning to retaliate against Democrats if they ever take back control of the House by voting to remove them from committees based on any false accusation they can make up. It’s a dangerous slippery slope that will only divide the nation further. There is no question that Greene should be removed. Her behavior is ill-befitting of a member of Congress and does nothing to serve the people of Georgia or the United States. She has not shown any remorse for her words and actions and will only continue to get worse if not held accountable now. McCarthy should be ashamed of himself and should resign since he cannot show enough backbone to do what is right.
