Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned during a Fox News interview on Sunday that Republicans intend to start impeachment proceedings against Democrats in retaliation of disgraced former President Donald Trump being impeached a second time.
Trump was impeached for inciting insurrection at the Capitol, and while there were not enough votes to convict, there were 57 votes for conviction to 43 votes for acquittal. In the end, seven Republicans joined all 50 Democrats, making the vote to convict a bipartisan one.
Of course, Graham voted to acquit because he’s Trump’s top toady. He would carry Trump’s golf clubs through 18 holes if Trump told him to do so.
And now he appears to be threatening that Republicans will do revenge impeachments against Democrats, a total abuse of the impeachment power, if the GOP takes over the House majority in 2022.
“I thought the impeachment trial was not only unconstitutional, I condemn what happened on January 6th, but the process they used to impeach this president was an affront to rule of law,” Graham claimed. “We’ve opened Pandora’s Box to future presidents.”
Actually, the process to impeach was absolutely constitutional. The Constitution does not lay out very many details about impeachment procedure, other than it originates in the House and the Senate conducts a trial. Democrats did that. If Graham is talking about the trial taking place after Trump left office, it’s still constitutional because the House impeached Trump before he left office and impeachment is just as much about barring a president or former president from running for office ever again as it is about removing one.
“And if you use this model, I don’t know how Kamala Harris doesn’t get impeached if the Republicans take over the House,” he continued. “Because she actually bailed out rioters and one of the rioters went back to the streets and broke somebody’s head open. So we’ve opened Pandora’s Box here and I’m sad for the country.”
Bailing people out of jail is not against the law. If it were, there’s a bunch of right-wingers who should be arrested for bailing out Kyle Rittenhouse, who murdered two protesters in Wisconsin. Furthermore, it appears Harris merely donated to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which helps people post bail who can’t afford to post it themselves. In the end, it’s up to judges to determine who can be released and who cannot.
Graham went on to declare that Trump did not break the law on January 6th when his supporters stormed the Capitol in response to his call for them to march to the building and “fight” to overturn the election results.
“In terms of the law, no,” he said. “He bears responsibility of pushing narratives about the election that I think are not sound and not true. But this was politically protected speech. The speech on Jan. 6th was not an incitement of violence.”

The law, however, says otherwise.
According to 18 U.S. Code § 2383:
Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.
Trump broke this exact law and should be prosecuted. If Republicans actually cared about law and order, they would have voted to convict him. Let’s not forget that Graham voted to impeach Bill Clinton for receiving oral sex. Apparently, inciting insurrection gets a pass.
Graham is literally proposing that Republicans abuse the impeachment power and start impeaching Democrats for imaginary crimes in revenge for impeaching Trump, who committed a very real crime.
It’s absolutely ludicrous and demonstrates why he should never have been elected to serve another term. South Carolina voters should be ashamed of themselves.
