House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is not about to just “move on” and let America forget that disgraced former President Donald Trump and his Republican co-conspirators incited an insurrection at the Capitol to stay in power.
That’s why she has approved of a 9/11-style commission to investigate the attempted coup, which occurred on January 6th when Trump supporters stormed the building to overthrow democracy.
Trump had been impeached for the second time for his role in the insurrection, but Senate Republicans prevented him from being convicted in the Senate, making further investigation and immediate prosecutions absolutely necessary.
On Monday, Pelosi released a statement announcing that there will be such an investigation that builds on the probe currently being conducted by General Russel Honoré.
“For the past few weeks, General Honoré has been assessing our security needs by reviewing what happened on January 6 and how we must ensure that it does not happen again,” Pelosi wrote. “He has been working with Committees of Jurisdiction and will continue to make proposals.”
It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened. To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex… and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region.”
“As we prepare for the Commission, it is also clear from General Honoré’s interim reporting that we must put forth a supplemental appropriation to provide for the safety of Members and the security of the Capitol,” she concluded.
Again, it’s a move that makes sense and needs to happen. Unlike Republicans, who wasted millions of taxpayer dollars and three years on their witch hunt over the 2012 Benghazi attacks that left four Americans dead, House Democrats have a real scandal to investigate. Several House and Senate Republicans cheered on the insurrection or incited it, including Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Co.), who live-tweeted Pelosi’s location during the violence, and Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.). Many also pushed Trump’s election lies, which ginned up his supporters into a militant frenzy. And seven Americans are dead as a result.
Should the results conclude that any Republicans are in any way responsible or complicit with the insurrection, they should be ousted from Congress and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
This investigation should haunt Republicans into the 2022 and 2024 elections. Of course, they’ll whine about it. But that’s when Bengahzi can be thrown in their faces because that witch hunt did not produce a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing by the Obama administration or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who testified for 11 hours under oath. Trump refused to testify during his impeachment trial. That difference pretty much says it all. Now it’s Democrats’ turn to put Republicans in the hot seat.
