For the first time, a former appointee of disgraced former President Donald Trump has been arrested for participating in the Capitol insurrection.

The investigation into the attempted overthrow of our democracy on January 6th continues to yield arrests and charges, and is even encompassing Republican lawmakers who may have been involved in one way or another.

And those Republicans should be freaking out because the FBI is clearly taking this matter seriously. Just ask Federico Klein, a former Trump appointee in the State Department who is under arrest for connections to the insurrection that were not specified.

According to Politico:

The FBI on Thursday arrested Federico Klein, a former State Department aide, on charges related to the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, marking the first known instance of an appointee of President Donald Trump facing criminal prosecution in connection with the attempt to block Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s victory. Klein, 42, was taken into custody in Virginia, said Samantha Shero, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Washington Field Office. Details on the charges against him were not immediately available.

Klein worked on Trump’s 2016 campaign and was then hired at the State Department. As of last summer, he was listed in a federal directory as serving as a special assistant in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs and was designated as a ‘Schedule C’ political appointee.

In addition, the report states that Klein once worked for right-wing hate group Family Research Council.

This is a big arrest and could be the first of many to come as the evidence starts piling up against people in Trump’s circle. Frankly, Trump himself should be arrested and prosecuted for inciting insurrection. But one has to wonder if any other Trump appointees participated in the insurrection and whether or not they are still working in government. If so, they need to be fired immediately.

Republicans in Congress who supported or aided the insurrectionists should also be terrified of the FBI getting closer to potentially arresting them. Smart money is on Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Co.), who tweeted out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) location as the Trump supporters were storming the building. There’s also Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.).

One way or another, the FBI is going to get to the bottom of this high crime. So Trump administration officials and Republicans in Congress had better be worried.
