Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) made a complete fool of herself on Sunday as she complained about the cost of the American Rescue Plan and the fact that it helps blue states.

Disgraced former President Donald Trump callously refused to send aid to Democratic-run states as the coronavirus pandemic raged, and Blackburn seemed to be upset that this relief package fixes that egregious betrayal of more than half the American people during a Fox News interview.

“The Democrats did not want timely relief prior to the election,” Blackburn claimed. “They wanted people to suffer and Nancy Pelosi told us why. She said because they felt like it would help them win the election.”

That’s not true. In fact, Democrats voted in favor of both relief packages passed in 2020 even though the first package overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy and corporations, who took billions of dollars in PPP funds that were supposed to be meant for small businesses.

“Do you think it really is fair to say Democrats wanted people to suffer? I mean, they don’t want people to suffer,” Fox host Eric Shawn replied.

“They delayed relief when people were saying we desperately need relief,” Blackburn said. “They delayed money to small businesses when small businesses were saying we need another round of PPP. That was a choice they made.”

Again, Republicans allowed the first round of PPP funds to be abused, which is why a second round was required. Republicans also dillydallied for several months after passing the first coronavirus relief package last March, refusing to pass a new round of relief House Democrats approved over the summer. It would not be until after the election that Senate Republicans would finally agree to give Americans a pathetic $600 check that wouldn’t even cover a month of rent for most.

Blackburn then threw a fit about blue states getting financial aid.

“Do you really need to bail out the blue states that have mismanaged their funds and have mismanaged their pensions?” she said before Shawn reminded her that red states, including Tennessee, are getting aid as well.

“But you also know your state gets $6 billion, Florida gets $16 billion, Texas gets $27 billion. So red states get a lot of money too,” Shawn noted.

In the face of being fact-checked, Blackburn switched gears to whine about the national debt.

“It is immoral to continue to pile debt on our children and grandchildren,” she said. “It is selfish not to sit down and work this out so that we are not adding to the debt. There are all sorts of good things that you can do with money but we have to remember, the federal government only has money that the taxpayer sends to them. Socialism is fine until you run out of other people’s money. And this continuing to say you’re going to pick winners and losers with federal government money, which is taxpayer money, is completely inappropriate and, yes, it does need to stop.”

Let’s talk about taxpayer money and the national debt. Blackburn voted for the GOP tax law in 2017 that gave trillions of dollars to the wealthy and corporations. The Congressional Budget Office projected that the law will add over $2 trillion to the debt over the next decade. Blackburn and her Republican colleagues didn’t care about the debt then. And they certainly love using “other people’s money” since red states are welfare states that take in more federal dollars than they send back.

Blackburn’s hypocrisy is galling. Had Democrats been in control of the House and Senate and the White House in 2020, Americans would have received more financial help earlier. Not one Republican in the House and Senate voted for the American Rescue Plan. If Republicans had their way, Americans would get nothing but suffering, all while making sure the rich get richer.
