Just a week after one of her staffers attempted to bully a House Democrat for wearing a mask, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) sparked further outrage by comparing House mask rules to the Holocaust.
More than 580,000 Americans have died from the coronovirus and while the CDC says that vaccinated Americans can stop wearing them, many are still doing so to protect themselves and others from contracting it. In addition, businesses and government bodies can still require people to wear masks.
As such, the House of Representatives still requires every member to wear a mask on the House floor. One of the reasons why is because while every Democrat has been vaccinated, most Republicans refuse to get vaccinated, making them a potential spreader of the virus and a public health risk.
Last week, one of Greene’s staffers earned the wrath of Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) by trying to harass him for wearing a mask.
Now Greene is declaring that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is somehow repeating the Holocaust by still requiring masks.
“You know, we can look back at a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star, and they were definitely treated like second-class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany, and this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about,” Greene told a right-wing podcaster.
Once again, Republicans are engaging in a false equivalency to attack Democrats. Requiring EVERYONE to wear a mask on the House floor is nowhere near comparable to the genocide committed against six million Jews during the Holocaust by Nazi Germany. In fact, you can’t even call it discrimination. Republicans are not being specifically targeted by mask rules. Even Democrats have to wear them.
Greene’s comparison was so wrong that Jewish organizations called her out.
You can never compare health-related restrictions with yellow stars, gas chambers & other Nazi atrocities.
Such comparisons demean the Holocaust & contaminate American political speech.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene must immediately retract and apologize.https://t.co/pdU8H8h2tO

Antisemitism is real, dangerous, and on the rise.
Equating public health precautions with the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust is disgraceful and unacceptable. @RepMTG, stop spreading falsehoods to please your base.https://t.co/biHmpUFHrG

Marjorie Taylor Greene should be expelled from Congress and barred from ever running for public office again. This is the same kind of rhetoric she and other Republicans used to incite the Capitol insurrection on January 6th and will likely incite future coup attempts and violence against Democrats unless Greene and her hateful ilk face severe consequences for their deplorable behavior.
