A New York appellate court judge has suspended Rudy Giuliani’s license to practice law for pushing disgraced former President Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 Election.
Giuliani and other Trump lawyers pushed election lies across the country claiming that they had evidence and witnesses to prove widespread voter fraud. Of course, Giuliani never produced the witnesses, nor the evidence, in a court of law. The Trump campaign lost 60 court cases challenging the election results precisely because they couldn’t or wouldn’t produce evidence to back up their accusations.
Needless to say, Giuliani and Trump have done significant damage to democracy and their lies led to the Capitol insurrection on January 6th.
That’s why the Attorney Grievance Committee filed a complaint against Giuliani that could result in him being disbarred. Not only did the Attorney Grievance Committee contend that Giuliani’s lies fueled the insurrection, but they also violated the public trust in election processes and the legal profession.
On Thursday, the court agreed with the Attorney Grievance Committee and suspended Giuliani’s license.
“There is uncontroverted evidence that respondent communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump’s failed effort at reelection in 2020,” the court said. “These false statements were made to improperly bolster respondent’s narrative that due to widespread voter fraud, victory in the 2020 United States presidential election was stolen from his client.”
“We conclude that respondent’s conduct immediately threatens the public interest and warrants interim suspension from the practice of law, pending further proceedings before the Attorney Grievance Committee,” the court concluded.
Giuliani’s lawyers were “disappointed” by the ruling and insisted the decision will be reversed.
“We believe that once the issues are fully explored at a hearing, Mr. Giuliani will be reinstated as a valued member of the legal profession,” they said.
Trump even threw a hissy fit about the ruling while portraying Giuliani as some sort of hero.
But Giuliani is not a hero. He’s an accomplice to the intentional subverting of our democratic institutions. He’s a disgrace to the legal profession and his law license should be stripped. And because he is complicit in Trump’s scheme to overthrow the Constitution, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Lawyers who abuse their licenses to undermine our democracy should face consequences. It’s the only way to prevent this kind of corruption in the future.
