Disgraced former President Donald Trump planned to speak at a July 4th rally in Alabama, but officials denied the permit because the event would be partisan and not patriotic.

The USS Alabama is a World War II battleship that is now a national historic landmark and museum in Mobile Bay. Holding partisan political rallies at the ship has been prohibited since 2012. But Trump was to be the keynote speaker at a July 4th rally this weekend, which instantly defined the rally as partisan because Trump viciously attacks Democrats and spreads lies. Seeing as how he’s also a five-time draft dodger who incited an insurrection to overthrow democracy, allowing him to speak in front of a battleship that fought against authoritarianism would be inappropriate.

That’s why USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park commissioner Bill Tunnell issued a statement rejecting the rally.

“After the request was made, then there was contact with the Republican Party, they contacted us and then it became apparent that it was going to be a partisan political event, rather than just a patriotic event planned for that evening,” Tunnell said.

Trump’s past July 4th events have also been heavily partisan and smack of authoritarianism.

Americans celebrated the news of the rejection on Twitter:

And so, Trump has tucked his tail between his legs and has retreated to Florida to hold a rally there instead. But at least he won’t be able to desecrate the USS Alabama.
