House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has chosen the five Republicans he wants on the 1/6 Select Committee to investigate the Capitol insurrection, and Americans do not approve.
Republicans have been resisting pressure to support a probe of the events of January 6th when Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overthrow democracy, perhaps because some Republican lawmakers were involved in the planning or at least aided the insurrectionists.
The GOP’s refusal to support a bipartisan independent commission blew up in their faces last month as House Democrats voted to create a select committee that Republicans will have significantly less power on.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has already selected the Democratic members and one Republican, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), to serve in the first eight seats on the committee. After much speculation, McCarthy has now chosen the five Republicans.
To his credit, McCarthy avoided picking Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Lauren Boebert (R-Co.), and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), but some of the Republicans he did pick are not much better.
NEW: McCarthy picks for Jan. 6 select committee, via GOP source:
Jim Banks (ranking member)
Jim Jordan
Rodney Davis
Kelly Armstrong
Troy Nehls— Andrew Solender (@AndrewSolender) July 19, 2021
In fact, three of those Republicans— Banks, Jordan, and Nehls— voted against certifying the 2020 Election results. Armstrong and Davis actually did their job by accepting reality.
Needless to say, McCarthy clearly picked Republicans who will try to turn the committee into a circus and will suck up to and defend Donald Trump while denying the facts of what happened on January 6th.
Thankfully, Pelosi has the ability to veto McCarthy’s picks, and that could mean Jordan and Banks are out, especially since Banks had the gall to blame Pelosi for the insurrection in a statement released after being selected.

Needless to say, Americans certainly are not impressed, and they made that known on Twitter.
Gym has no business being on the committee. He is there to turn it into a circus

Oh God, not Jim Jordan. Nothing will get accomplished. This is terrible news.

Wouldn’t Jim Jordan instead classify as a person of interest?

Meet the committee: White guys! So many white guys!

There is no way Pelosi should let Jim Jordan on that Committee.

You mean the criminal coconspirators are going to “investigate”, the crime itself❓🤔

A big NO to all 3 of them that voted against certifying the election.

I think @SpeakerPelosi should veto any of Kevin McCarthy’s GOP picks for the January 6 committee who spoke out in support of the insurrection or defended it in any way. https://t.co/BY8zeuxbBG

Three out of these five — Banks, Jordan and Nehls — voted to challenge the results of the elections in PA and AZ.
They have no place on the committee. Pelosi should move to block all three (though just implementing a dress code would keep Jordan off) https://t.co/u76O6wFwvc

.@SpeakerPelosi, as a Vet who took an oath to defend the Constitution, I respectfully request that you make a motion to veto Jim Jordan from the Janurary 6th committe. He is a gerrymandering partisan hack and the American people deserve to know what really happened. @TeamPelosi

On Pelosi’s part, she appeared poised to make her decision soon.
The list includes three Republicans who for Electoral College objections.
Pelosi ultimately has the final say. “Just received the names. Stay tuned,” her spox tells @Forbes.
