Reps. Matt Gaetz (FL) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) got the door slammed and locked in their faces when they showed up at a prison on Thursday in a staged attempt to meet with some of those alleged to have participated in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Two conservative “news” outlets — One America News and Right Side Broadcasting — followed along with Gaetz and Greene (who were also joined by Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas) and tried to enter a holding facility/prison for some of the accused insurrectionists, whom right-wingers refer to as “political prisoners.”

But when Gaetz tried to open the door to the facility, it was promptly locked in his face, leading Greene to remark:

“They think we’re trespassing.”

In a sense, Gaetz, Greene, and Gohmert were indeed trespassing. No member of Congress is allowed to just show up unannounced at a federal prison or holding center and demand entrance. That’s simply not how things work. You’d think that elected officials would know that.
