Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) needs to be subpoenaed to testify in front of the 1/6 Select Committee after he admitted that he wore body armor that day because he knew what would likely happen.
Brooks is being sued in court by Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) for inciting the Capitol insurrection by delivering violent rhetoric to Trump supporters prior to them storming the building to overthrow democracy.
The Justice Department and House counsel have both since refused to defend Brooks against the lawsuit, and he only dug himself a deeper hole by suggesting he knew in advance— two days earlier— that an insurrection attempt would take place.
“I was warned on Monday that there might be risks associated with the next few days,” Brooks told Slate writer Jim Newell. “And as a consequence of those warnings, I did not go to my condo. Instead, I slept on the floor of my office. And when I gave my speech at the Ellipse, I was wearing body armor. That’s why I was wearing that nice little windbreaker. To cover up the body armor.”
Seriously. Brooks literally wore body armor during his incendiary speech to angry Trump supporters in which he told them to “start taking down names and kicking ass.” He would go on to implore the crowd to sacrifice their “blood, their sweat, their tears, their fortunes, and…their lives. Are you willing to do what it takes to fight for America!”
Not long after that, Trump’s supporters violently stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overthrow the legitimate election results and were looking for lawmakers to assassinate along the way.
Clearly, Brooks knew what was going to happen and he apparently did not warn anyone, including his own colleagues. Of course, several Republicans in the House and Senate either helped incite the insurrectionists or supported and aided them in some way, such as when Rep. Lauren Boebert live-tweeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) location.
Republicans wanted this insurrection. They incited it. They knew it would happen. They hoped Democratic lawmakers would be killed and they didn’t care how much blood was spilled as long as they could keep Trump and themselves in power. There must be prosecutions. There must be expulsions from Congress. There must be severe consequences or this will happen again.
