Rudy Giuliani continued the GOP tradition of politicizing the 9/11 attacks to attack Democrats on Sunday during a bizarre rant.

Giuliani was the mayor of New York City when commercial planes were hijacked by terrorists and flown into the World Trade Center twin towers on September 11, 2001. An additional plane slammed into the Pentagon and a fourth plane was brought down in Pennsylvania by courageous passengers who tried to retake control.

It has been 20 years since that tragic day, and Giuliani is still politicizing it to falsely smear Democrats, which he did by blaming the attack on former President Bill Clinton and trying to tie it to current President Joe Biden.

“To break our spirit, to demoralize us, you take our financial center, our military center, our political center all in one shot,” Giuliani told a Fox affiliate. “And those weak Americans — remember, [Al-Qaeda] had attacked us a couple of times and declared war against us, and basically Bill Clinton kind of did what Biden just did.”

“You know, a little strike here, a little strike there, a couple of fields that had no people in it,” he continued. “All that said to [Osama bin Laden] is, ‘I’ve got a sucker on my hands. I can hit this guy and who knows. I might not get anything.'”

Republicans always conveniently forget that George W. Bush was president in 2001 when the 9/11 attacks were carried out. Bush also received intelligence warnings that Al-Qaeda was planning to use planes in a potential terrorist attack. It should also be pointed out that Clinton ordered strikes against Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden in the waning weeks of his presidency, but there was not much else he could do since he was leaving office and did not have the kind of war powers that Bush received from Congress in the wake of 9/11.

As for Biden, he just completed the American withdrawal from Afghanistan, a war that had been raging for the last 20 years in response to 9/11. The Taliban retook control of Afghanistan because Donald Trump negotiated with them without including the Afghan government, thus delegitimizing it. He also orchestrated the release of 5,000 Taliban fighters and their leader. Furthermore, the attack that left 13 American troops dead in Kabul last month was committed by ISIS, a terrorist group Trump had proclaimed defeated not too long ago.

The fact that Republicans are still using 9/11 to falsely smear Democrats demonstrates to many Americans that they never cared about the nearly 3,000 victims who perished that day, and they still don’t.
