Americans failed to listen to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016 and we ended up with Donald Trump in the White House and a constitutional crisis that continues to this day.
The Capitol insurrection on January 6th was just the beginning of Trump’s scheme to overthrow democracy. It failed, but he and his Republican allies are still orchestrating a slow-moving coup that could spell the end for our country.
Republicans openly support authoritarianism over democracy, yet too many Americans are content to just stand by and watch it happen. Even the House January 6th Committee appears poised to let Trump and his henchmen off the hook rather than take the actions necessary to hold him accountable and prevent future coup attempts.
During an interview on “The View,” Clinton warned Americans to remain on guard because the assault on our democracy is not over.
“You know, I think we not only came close to a full constitutional crisis, I think we’re still in it,” Clinton said. “That gives me absolutely no satisfaction in saying this because I think we’re in a very dangerous continuing high-level attack on the legitimacy of our government and the election of our president. And obviously, our former president is not only behind it, he incited it, he encouraged it, and he continues to do so.”
It’s just not Trump either. Clinton reminded us that Republican lawmakers, right-wing media, and social media are also involved in the plot to overthrow the Constitution.
“And you have leaders of the Republican Party who have willingly gone along as though they’re members of a cult, not a political party but a cult, and they’re continuing attacks on the election, their refusal to say, ‘You know what, we’ve counted these votes. It’s over. We’re gonna move on,’ has sown so much doubt and then you combine it with the disinformation network known as Facebook, and you’ve got a volatile mix. So yeah, we are still in the midst of a concerted well-funded effort to undermine American Democracy.”

Voters did not listen to Hillary in 2016 and our country has paid a heavy price for it ever since. If we fail to listen to her again, we stand to lose everything.
