Ex-GOP strategist Steve Schmidt took Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to the woodshed on Monday for being a serial liar and a “historically despicable person” in response to remarks Cruz made the day before.

During an interview on Sunday, Cruz repeatedly insisted that election fraud is real in defense of his attempt to overturn the 2020 Election, an effort that ended with an attempted coup when Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol to overthrow democracy.

“Face The Nation” host Margaret Brennan called him out for lying, pointing out that there is no evidence of election fraud, which is why Trump’s lawsuits were thrown out of court.

After watching footage of Cruz’s lies, Schmidt did not hold back.

“[Cruz] is a historically despicable person,” Schmidt began. “He ranks up there with Joe McCarthy. He’s a demagogue. He’s a liar. He’s as irresponsible a United States senator as there has ever been in the history of the United States. He arrived in the Senate and has been a vandal towards our institutions and towards the idea of the truth and delivering it to the American people.”

“When you look at somebody like Ted Cruz, you know he’s lying. Everybody knows he’s lying. Ted Cruz knows he’s lying,” Schmidt continued. “But extraordinary cynicism coupled with the type of propaganda that comes out of Fox News and the right-wing can turn that nonsense into reality. So, Ted Cruz helped incite the Jan. 6th attacks with his lying, with instigations. He was, of course, revving up the crowd there that morning. And he has sought to whitewash it with more lying for many, many months. He is a truly despicable figure at a moment of real crisis.”

Cruz not only participated in inciting the insurrection, but he would also go on to abandon Texans during a deadly winter storm by fleeing with his family to Cancun in Mexico. Upon arriving back in Texas after much backlash, Cruz had the gall to blame his kids for his behavior instead of taking personal responsibility. It does not get any more despicable than that, yet Cruz always somehow finds a way to lower the bar.
