A new report should send chills down the spines of Donald Trump and every Republican lawmaker who was involved in the Capitol insurrection because the House January 6th Committee is now considering criminal conspiracy charges.
After months of investigating the attempted overthrow of our democracy and revelations tying Trump and Republican lawmakers to the insurrection, it now appears that the committee is prepared to pursue serious charges against them.
Indeed, Republicans were deeply involved in the attempted coup, with several of them being directly involved in the organization and planning phase of the events that unfolded on January 6, 2021.
Republican lawmakers who should be particularly scared right now include Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), and Lauren Boebert (R-Co.).
Brooks was recently outed for cheering on the insurrectionists from inside the Capitol not long after he incited the crowd to commit bloodshed at a Trump rally held earlier in the day, complete while wearing body armor.
Boebert not only incited the insurrection on Twitter, but she also live-tweeted the location of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as the House floor was being evacuated. The insurrectionists were actively seeking to assassinate lawmakers.
Jordan actually spoke to Trump that day on his own admission but refuses to say what the two discussed, making it clear that he has something to hide.
It’s been a long time coming, but the House January 6th Committee is reportedly going to finally zero in on Republican lawmakers and may charge them with criminal conspiracy according to The Guardian.
“The committee’s new focus on the potential for a conspiracy marks an aggressive escalation in its inquiry as it confronts evidence that suggests the former president potentially engaged in criminal conduct egregious enough to warrant a referral to the justice department,” the publication said. “House investigators are interested in whether Trump oversaw a criminal conspiracy after communications turned over by Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows and others suggested the White House coordinated efforts to stop Biden’s certification, the sources said.”
“The fact that the select committee has messages suggesting the Trump White House directed Republican members of Congress to execute a scheme to stop Biden’s certification is significant as it could give rise to the panel considering referrals for potential crimes,” the report continued.
“The select committee believes, the sources said, that Trump may be culpable for an obstruction charge given he failed for hours to intervene to stop the violence at the Capitol perpetrated by his supporters in his name,” the report concluded. “But the select committee is also looking at whether Trump oversaw an unlawful conspiracy that involved coordination between the ‘political elements’ of the White House plan communicated to Republican lawmakers and extremist groups that stormed the Capitol.”
This would be a big step toward finally bringing culpable Republicans to justice. This is why Republicans opposed investigating the insurrection in the first place. Any legitimate probe would have uncovered their involvement in the plot to overthrow democracy. In addition to criminal charges, Democrats must also invoke section 3 of the 14th Amendment to bar these lawmakers from continuing to serve in Congress. They participated in an insurrection against our nation and that must not be taken lightly or they will do it again. They need to face the most serious consequences for their actions.
